Learning a new language can be very challenging, especially if you use only the old methods of drilling and memorizing. Although we do a bit of that at the English school in Toronto, I use more modern methods that are not boring at all. No matter how old you are, learning through fun is a great way to learn! One of the things my students love is learning songs in English. First they pick a favorite song, then I explain what the words mean, and we even act them out sometimes. It is funny to watch adults act out the words to the Beatles tune, “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” However, it works! We play “Simon Says” where I will give a command, like, “Brush your teeth,” and they act that out too, but only if I’ve said, “Simon says.”

The English school in Toronto helps students to build on verbs and vocabulary. For example, they may start with a three word sentence like, “I eat fish.” With new words and phrases, those three words can become, “My sweet mother and I eat delicious fish and chips with my nice father at the beautiful Chinese restaurant.” Sometimes we will play a game where they receive a point for each word in a sentence they compose, and the winner gets to pick the next game.

I have a small in-house daycare in my home, currently we have three toddlers enrolled. I have been slowly transforming our basement into a play room for the kids. Having an intense child can be very hard. My little Ellie is about the sweetest child you will ever meet, most of the time, but then if you cross her she throws a fit that will bring the house down. We have done everything that we can think of to help her through this issue, but haven’t had a ton of luck. The one thing that we have found that she responds well too is structure. At our home we are very structured and we avoid doing things that might throw her off her schedule and throw her into a frenzy.
